Youth Philharmonic

The Youth Philharmonic is an intermediate-level orchestra for students in grades 4–9, building on the skills developed in Youth Ensemble and preparing students for Youth Camerata.

The orchestra performs educational repertoire and accessible arrangements of symphonic works. Instruction emphasizes following the conductor, rhythmic accuracy, tone production, listening, ensemble collaboration, and rehearsal etiquette — string players focus on bow technique, wind and brass players on breath control. Students work with Charlotte Symphony musicians during sectional and coaching sessions throughout the season, and are encouraged to take private lessons and participate in school music programs, arriving at rehearsals having reviewed their music in advance.

Youth Philharmonic meets once a week for 1 hour 45 minutes and performs three times a year at Blumenthal Performing Arts venues in Uptown Charlotte, as well as in communities across the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.

Students join through auditions held each year. Contact us to schedule an audition today.

Learn From Charlotte Symphony Musicians

We hold sectional rehearsals throughout the year for all CSYO ensembles, giving young musicians the chance to work directly with Charlotte Symphony musicians on techniques and challenges specific to their instrument.
