Healing Hands
The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra believes in the restorative power of music. For more than 20 years, the Charlotte Symphony's Healing Hands program has brought musicians into area hospitals, libraries, senior care centers, and recreation centers, enriching the lives of patients, residents, and community members. Performances range in size from intimate small ensembles to chamber orchestra concerts led by Resident Conductor Christopher James Lees.
The Charlotte Symphony is also dedicated to serving individuals living with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Healing Hands performances are designed to be accessible for those in the early to middle stages of memory loss. Programs include interactive elements and opportunities for audience participation, giving patients and caregivers pathways to connect through a shared musical experience.
The Laurel Trio
Since the program's inception, (left to right) CSO flutist Amy Orsinger Whitehead, cellist Deborah Kauffman Mishoe, and violinist Elizabeth Pistolesi — named The Laurel Trio — have been using their music to enrich the lives of patients, residents, and community members throughout Charlotte. They are just one of the ensembles engaged in the Healing Hands program.
