What to expect

If you’ve never been to a symphony concert before, here’s how the evening typically unfolds.

  • Arrive 20–30 minutes early: Give yourself time to park, find your seat, and settle in.
  • Take in the atmosphere: Many audience members enjoy reading the program book or watching the musicians warm up on stage.
  • The concert begins: The Concertmaster walks onstage to tune the Orchestra before the conductor takes the stage and the concert begins.
  • Intermission: Most concerts include a 20-minute break to stretch, enjoy a drink, and take in the lobby atmosphere before the second half of the program.
  • The final applause: The concert concludes with applause as the musicians are recognized for their performance.

Why experience it live?

A live orchestral performance is something recordings can’t fully capture. You feel the energy between the conductor, musicians, and soloists as they play, breathe, and respond to each other in real time. It’s an experience that can’t be replicated, only shared in the moment between musicians and audience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a symphony orchestra?

A symphony orchestra is a large ensemble of musicians playing string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments together. At the Charlotte Symphony, our musicians perform a wide range of music, from classical to contemporary, film scores, pop music, jazz, and more.

Do I need to know anything about classical music?

Not at all. Many first-time guests have never attended a symphony concert before. Program notes and pre-concert talks are available if you are interested, but they are optional. You can simply listen and enjoy.

Can I bring kids?

Yes, many families attend Charlotte Symphony concerts.

Family Series concerts are designed for children ages 4–9. Children under 2 may attend free if seated on a parent or guardian’s lap.

For most Pops, Movie, Classical, and Special Event performances, children age 6 and up are welcome with a ticket.*

*For movie concerts, please check ratings listed on the event page.

When should I arrive?

We recommend arriving 20 to 30 minutes before the concert begins to allow time for parking, refreshments, and finding your seat.

Late seating is typically permitted only at a designated pause in the program. If you need to step out during the performance, re-entry may also be timed to natural breaks in the music.

What should I wear?

Wear what makes you feel comfortable. Some choose business or dress attire for Classical Series concerts, while others prefer jeans and casual wear. Pops and Family Series concerts tend to feel more relaxed.

How long is a typical concert?

Most performances last approximately 2 hours, including a 20-minute intermission.

How many musicians are on stage?

The Charlotte Symphony includes 65 full-time musicians. The exact number on stage depends on the pieces being performed, ranging from smaller chamber-sized ensembles to full orchestras of 90–100 musicians for large works.

When do people clap?

You'll notice that audience members applaud at three moments at the beginning of the concert: 1) To welcome the Concertmaster (violinist who sits in the first chair of the first row). 2) To welcome the conductor to the stage, which occurs after the orchestra finishes tuning. 3) To welcome any soloists to the stage.

Some works may have several sections, or movements, separated by brief silent pauses. In Classical concerts, it is tradition to hold applause until after the last movement. If you are unsure, wait for the conductor to face the audience. But if you feel truly inspired, don’t be afraid to show your appreciation.

Can I take photos or use my phone?

We welcome photos before and after the concert or during intermission. Feel free to use your cell phone for photography without flash during the performance, but please refrain from video or audio recording.

Can I leave the hall during the performance?

Yes, but re-entry is typically held until a natural break in the music.

How can I learn more about the music?

Program notes are available on our website for each performance and in our digital program books. Pre-concert talks are offered for most Classical Series performances in the lobby one hour before the concert.
