Charlotte Symphony's Healing Hands Program Changing Lives

Mar 2, 2020

The Charlotte Symphony is bringing the music out of the theater, and into the community through the Healing Hands program.

Musicians take their talents to places like hospitals, libraries, and senior care centers. The goal is to enrich the lives of people in Charlotte, while also opening their eyes to the arts scene in the city.

People don't expect to see classical musicians playing at recreation centers, and the musicians say it helps expose people to new types of music.

"Sometimes when we're on the big stage, we don't get to make that connection with the audience in quite the same way. So we're in a small room, playing just a trio playing for a smaller group of people they feel free to speak up during the concert, and be a part of the whole concert," says Amy Orsinger Whitehead, a flutist with the Charlotte Symphony. "It's so much fun to be able to make those kind of connections."
