Healing Hands
We believe in the restorative power of music. For over 20 years the Charlotte Symphony's Healing Hands program has sent musicians into area hospitals, libraries, senior care centers, and recreation centers to enrich the lives of patients, residents, and community members. Programs range in size from intimate small ensemble performances to a chamber orchestra led by Resident Conductor Christopher James Lees. The Charlotte Symphony is also dedicated to reaching those in our community who suffer from Alzheimer's and dementia. As a result, all Healing Hands performances are customized to be accessible for early to middle stage patients. Performances include interactive elements and opportunities for audience participation, giving patients and caregivers pathways to connect through an interactive and shared musical experience.
In April 2019, we were honored to receive the 2018 Innovations in Alzheimer's Caregiving Award in the Creative Expression category for this program.
Since the program's inception, (left to right) CSO Flutist Amy Orsinger Whitehead, cellist Deborah Kauffman Mishoe, and violinist Elizabeth Pistolesi -- named The Laurel Trio -- have been using their music to enrich the lives of patients, residents, and community members throughout Charlotte. Just one of the ensembles engaged in the Healing Hands program.
