Symphony concert to conclude at 9:45 p.m., followed by fireworks

Jul 3, 2014

Although light rain continued to fall, the Charlotte Symphony's Summer Pops concert at SouthPark started at 9 p.m. Thursday.

"ON!! We are doing it!," the symphony tweeted at 8:30 p.m.

The symphony announced that it would perform until 9:45 p.m. and then, if the fire marshall approved, would launch the annual fireworks display.

The concert and fireworks were touch-and-go earlier Thursday evening when severe thunderstorms rolled into Charlotte, including SouthPark, where the symphony stages the annual patriotic concert and fireworks.

The National Weather Service said the storms were capable of producing quarter-size hail.

A flash flood warning has been issued for Mecklenburg County until 11 p.m. because so much rain fell.

The symphony's concert had originally been scheduled to start at 8:15 p.m., followed by the fireworks.

The symphony earlier tweeted that a big crowd stood in line as gates opened at 5 p.m.
