Charlotte Symphony to Perform On Campus Concert at CPCC November 3 Orchestra on Campus a Crucial Part of Educational Outreach
September 23, 2011- In a continued effort to cultivate a love of the arts among Charlotte’s youth, the Charlotte Symphony will perform an on-campus concert at Central Piedmont Community College’s Halton Theater on November 3 at 8:00 p.m. Part of the Symphony’s Orchestra on Campus project, Associate Conductor Jacomo Rafael Bairos will lead the Symphony in works by Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber and Duke Ellington.
The concert, Bearden: The Collage of Life and Art, joins in the community-wide centennial celebration of Charlotte-born artist Romare Bearden and unites three artistic disciplines—music, drama and visual art. Images of Bearden’s vibrant collages will be projected on a large screen above the orchestra and will accompany musical selections that evoke the Jazz age, New York City, colors, and feelings of reflection. Dramatic readings from the works of playwright August Wilson, a friend of Bearden’s, will contribute dramatic flair to the multi-disciplinary concert.
“The Charlotte Symphony believes that music is a vital part of lifelong learning, which we aspire to cultivate through diverse educational programs,” says Charlotte Symphony Education Manager Chris Stonnell. “Through initiatives such as the after-school strings program at Winterfield Elementary, the Orchestra on Campus partnership with CPCC, and our Debbie Phillips Classical Concerts for Students, the Symphony is able to bring music into the lives of a large portion of Charlotte’s youth.”
The evening’s repertoire will include Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Duke Ellington selections, Paul Dooley’s Point Blank and Michael Torke’s Bright Blue Music. The selections feature composers who lived during Bearden’s lifetime and represent a fusion of musical styles, colors and textures.
A limited number of tickets are available at the discounted rate of $12.00 for students and $20.00 for adults, and are only available by calling 704-972-2000.

"I love being part of the larger whole. When I used to be a Youth Orchestra coach, I would tell the kids that being in an orchestra is like playing chamber music with a really big group. I love how all the pieces fit together like a puzzle. Solo experiences have a different type of challenge and thrill, but making music this way on such a large scale is a wonderful type of satisfaction to me."
