Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras Perform
Fall Concert on November 21st
Ensembles Feature Talented Local Musicians

November 9, 2011- The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras will perform their annual fall concert on November 21 at 7:30 p.m.  Held at Central Piedmont Community College’s Halton Theater, the concert will feature Sergei Prokofiev’s timeless classic, “Peter and the Wolf”, narrated by Charlotte Symphony trombonist Thomas Burge, and works by Bizet and Elgar.  Dr. Ernest Pereira, director of the youth orchestras and violinist in the Charlotte Symphony, will conduct.

The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras are core components of the educational program of the Charlotte Symphony. These orchestras offer students a unique performing experience, through which nearly 200 talented young musicians obtain exceptional training in a semi-professional ensemble setting that includes monthly coaching with members of the Charlotte Symphony.

Many students in the CSYO have previously been members of the Junior Youth Orchestra.  The JYO offers training in the basics of orchestral musicianship and is made up of students in grades 4- 9. The orchestra performs an average of three concerts per year. The CSYO is open to students in grades 8-12.  The group performs an average of six concerts per year.  CSYO members attend an intensive pre-season music camp every summer.

The youth orchestras are also supported in part by The Symphony Guild of Charlotte, Inc., and the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras Parents Association.

Tickets to the November 21 concert are $8 for adults, $6 for students and seniors, and can be purchased at the door or in advance through the Charlotte Symphony Ticket Office at (704) 972-2000.

"I love being part of the larger whole. When I used to be a Youth Orchestra coach, I would tell the kids that being in an orchestra is like playing chamber music with a really big group. I love how all the pieces fit together like a puzzle. Solo experiences have a different type of challenge and thrill, but making music this way on such a large scale is a wonderful type of satisfaction to me."  Read more
