CSO Announces 2011-2012 Lollipops Series
Family concerts feature storytelling, orchestral classics, and special guests

The Charlotte Symphony (CSO) announces its 2011-2012 Lollipops concerts series, a set of four family concerts that celebrate stories, humor, and the wonders of a live orchestra. Performed on Saturday mornings, each hour-long concert is preceded by a pre-concert festival, which invites children to explore music in hands-on activities such as a lively drum circle and The Symphony Guild of Charlotte’s “Musical Petting Zoo.”

The series opens on September 24 with The Story of Babar, Jean de Brunhoff’s popular children’s book, with music by Francis Poulenc. The Phantom of the Lollipop (October 29) will send silly shivers down kids’ spines on Halloween weekend. The final concerts, A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (February 11) and Peter and the Wolf (May 5), introduce young audiences to the instruments of the orchestra in well-loved classics presented with a new twist.

The 2011-2012 Lollipops season will be led by CSO Associate Conductor Jacomo Rafael Bairos, who came to the Charlotte Symphony in September 2010 as Assistant Conductor and led Lollipops family concerts, education programs, and occasional special and run-out concerts in the 2010-2011 season.

Special guests include Michael Boudewyns (seen last season in Green Eggs and Ham), Drew Allison’s Grey Seals Puppets, and PROJECT Trio. A full season description is below.

Subscriptions to all four concerts are on sale starting at $40. For more information, call 704-972-2000 or visit the Charlotte Symphony website at www.charlottesymphony.org.

"I love being part of the larger whole. When I used to be a Youth Orchestra coach, I would tell the kids that being in an orchestra is like playing chamber music with a really big group. I love how all the pieces fit together like a puzzle. Solo experiences have a different type of challenge and thrill, but making music this way on such a large scale is a wonderful type of satisfaction to me."  Read more
