Charlotte Symphony Announces
2012-2013 Lollipops Series

Family series moves to the Knight Theater for all three concerts

(Charlotte, N.C.) - The Charlotte Symphony announces today its 2012-2013 Lollipops concert series with Jacomo Rafael Bairos, now a familiar face with the Charlotte Symphony, as series conductor. New this season, the Charlotte Symphony will perform three Saturday morning concerts in the more intimate Knight Theater. The move to the Knight Theater reflects the ongoing partnership between the Charlotte Symphony and Blumenthal Performing Arts (BPA). This season BPA will purchase and install an acoustical shell in the Knight Theater, which will now house the Lollipops and KnightSounds series as well as three concerts from the Winter Pops series.

The Lollipops series provides a fun and engaging introduction to classical music and the live orchestra experience through imaginative storytelling and inspiring reinterpretations of classical repertoire. The series opens with Carnivals and Clowns (Nov. 10), which features Drew Allison and Grey Seal Puppets, who will guide the children through the Russian tale of Petrushka, accompanied by Igor Stravinksky’s musical score. In January, the series will bring back PROJECT Trio for a Dancin’ Rockin’ and Hip Hoppin (Jan. 12) program featuring works by Beethoven, Rossini, and Brahms, reinterpreted through the group’s eclectic musical tastes and high-energy performance style.

For the third and final concert of the season, the Charlotte Symphony will collaborate with the North Carolina Dance Theatre School of Dance to present classic fairytales through music and movement. Once Upon a Time (May 4) will feature performances of The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Anderson, The Frog Prince by the Brother’s Grimm, Russian folktale The Firebird, and other stories.

The hour-long concerts are preceded by the popular pre-concert festival, which invites children to explore music through hands-on activities such as a lively drum circle, music-related arts and crafts, and The Symphony Guild of Charlotte’s “Musical Petting Zoo.”

Series subscriptions start at $36 and are available by calling the Charlotte Symphony Ticket Office at (704) 972-2000 or online at www.charlottesymphony.org.
