Pianist Joyce Yang Performs with the
Charlotte Symphony January 13 & 14

CSO Presents Evening of Dances and Rhapsodies

Beat the cold with an evening full of warm, romantic pieces and lively dances. On January 13 and 14th at 8 p.m. at the Belk Theater, the Charlotte Symphony will present works by Liszt and Rachmaninoff, featuring pianist Joyce Yang with guest conductor and North Carolina Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn.

Yang, the silver medalist of the 2005 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will perform Rachmaninoff’s dazzling “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” and Franz Lizst’s devilish Mephisto Waltz No. 3.

Critically acclaimed as “the most gifted young pianist of her generation,” Ms. Yang captivates audiences around the globe with her stunning virtuosity combined with heartfelt lyricism and interpretive sensitivity. At age twenty-five, she has established herself as one of the leading artists of her generation through her innovative solo recitals and notable collaborations with the world’s top orchestras.

Welsh-born Llewellyn has served as the North Carolina Symphony Music Director since 2004, and has been noted for his “transcendent performances” and “graceful and expressive direction.” He has conducted orchestras across the globe, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra.

A pre-concert Musically Speaking Chat with lecturer Anna Brock will begin at 7 p.m. inside the theater on the Orchestra level. A post-concert Musically Speaking Talk-Back with Ms. Yang and Mr. Llewellyn, moderated by President and Executive Director Jonathan Martin, will begin immediately following the concert. Both are free to ticket holders.

"I love being part of the larger whole. When I used to be a Youth Orchestra coach, I would tell the kids that being in an orchestra is like playing chamber music with a really big group. I love how all the pieces fit together like a puzzle. Solo experiences have a different type of challenge and thrill, but making music this way on such a large scale is a wonderful type of satisfaction to me."  Read more
