Instrumental Music Initiative

In this program, the Charlotte Symphony works intensively with the instrumental music programs at selected schools. Students are provided with individual, sectional, and full ensemble coaching by professional CSO players. The goals are to increase the playing abilities and musicianship of the students, give them the experience of performing in an ensemble, and to expose them to repertoire that they otherwise would be unable to play in a traditional classroom setting.

  • Winterfield Elementary Youth Orchestra
This program involves second through fifth grade students in a free, after-school instrumental music program at Winterfield Elementary School in east Charlotte. Students learn to play the violin, cello and percussion instruments from professional Charlotte Symphony musicians and teaching artists. Inspired by the internationally-acclaimed Venezuelan “El Sistema” model, the program builds community through the collaborative act of music making. The program currently involves 30 students of varying ages and playing abilities. The goal for the 2011-2012 school year is to expand the program to include flutes, trumpets and clarinets, with the ultimate goal of creating a small student orchestra.

Within this class students are broken into small chamber music ensembles, each of which is also coached by a CSO musician.

Integrative Residency Programs

The Charlotte Symphony has a long history of providing exciting and educational artist-in-residence programs for students of all ages in CMS. These programs involve integrating music with the core-curriculum in accordance with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. By integrating elements of music with a particular subject, the musician-educator uses music to develop the students’ imaginations so that they are better able to grasp academic concepts, to employ critical thinking skills and to express themselves.  The Symphony offers the following standing programs or we can tailor a program to suit the needs of individual schools.

  • Educational Explorations through Music—Language Arts
Educational Explorations through Music is a literacy-based, sequential partnership program whereby music is integrated into the core curricula with a focus on Language Arts and literary techniques. Each lesson involves hands-on activities relating text and the musical compositions. Students identify and interpret musical and literary elements that are crucial to the telling of a story or the writing of a poem. In most instances connections are made to other arts disciplines, in particular dance and visual arts. This program assists the students in expressing themselves with greater detail by providing a sensory context and frames of reference for imaginative expression.

  • Interpreting History through Art
This project demonstrates how history or cultural events can be the inspiration for an artistic work and how the arts can interpret history. Composer David Crowe works with students on the creative process and guides them to creating an original multi-disciplinary and multi-media performance piece based on community research. Disciplines have included band, orchestra, chorus, visual arts, dance, and drama. Regular partners include the Levine Museum of the New South and the Light Factory.
